 OCE Postdoctoral Fellow - Materials Science Metals

The Position

CSIRO Process Science Engineering are seeking to appoint a highly motivated graduate with a background in experimentation and an interest in modelling. Under the direction of a research scientist you will be engaged in innovative research to exploit the potential of combinatorial experimentation for the study, quantitative characterisation and model development of the effect of alloy chemistry and processing for the optimisation of the properties of precipitation hardenable alloy systems (e.g. steels, aluminium and copper alloys).

The proposed work will consist of a balanced program of creative experimental design, state-of-the-art quantitative characterisation and theory coupled with the modelling of microstructural evolution and property development. The goal is to provide the foundation for the 'virtual' alloy design of precipitation hardenable alloys.

Specifically you will:

Work with the modelling experts to plan and conduct experimental work on alloy development in precipitation hardening systems

Develop innovative concepts, theories, tools and techniques for the investigation and ysis of precipitation hardening mechanis

Develop and validate computer models for the microstructural evolution and property development in precipitation hardening systems

Location: Clayton, Victoria

Salary: $73K - $80K pa plus up to 15.4% Superannuation

Ref No: 2011/163

Tenure: 3 years/fulltime

To be successful you will have:

A PhD degree (or will shortly satisfy the requirements for a PhD degree) in organic chemistry or related discipline

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in synthetic organic chemistry

Demonstrated originality, creativity and innovation in solving problems and introducing new directions and approaches;

Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to publish the results of scientific research in scientific journals.
