Professor Tohru Fukuyama received his PhD in Chemistry in 1977 from Harvard University all under the direction of Professor Yoshito Kishi. In 1995 he returned to Japan to join the faculty of the University of Tokyo where he is currently Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His main research interests include total synthesis of structurally interesting molecules of medicinal importance and development of synthetically useful methodology. He has been successful in the total synthesis of such natural products as catharanthine, CP-263,114, cyanocycline, ecteinascidin 743, FR900482, gelsemine, isomitomycin A, K252a, leinamycin, mitomycin C, polyamine spider toxins, quinocarcine, vinblastine, and vindoline. He received the ACS Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award in 1993 and the Synthetic Organic Chemistry Award, Japan, in 2002.
