What is ATHENS?
The ATHENS service enables access to numerous datasets and information services by UK HE institutions. The key features of the service include "single password sign-on" to multiple resources and fully distributed management of user accounts.
What does an ATHENS account do?
It gives you one username and password to access many important information resources.
Who can have an ATHENS account?
All current LSE students and staff. ATHENS passwords are not available to visitors, including alumni.
How do I get an ATHENS account?
An ATHENS account is automatically created for you when you register. The username is based on the number on your ID card, so that if your card is replaced at any stage you will have a new username. You are not entitled to use ATHENS services after you have graduated or left the employment of the LSE.
What is my username and password, and how do I use it?
Use your ATHENS username and password to log into any of the ATHENS services listed on the main Passwords page or any electronic journal title requiring an ATHENS password.
Can I use ATHENS services from my home computer?
Yes, your personal username will access these services from any computer outside the School using a suitable browser. Please note that the general username can be used only on the LSE campus.

Your username and password
Your username is your 10-digit LSE ID number, prefixed by the letters LSE ( UPPER CASE letters, no spaces). Example: LSE0221012345
The ID number is on your card above the barcode, beginning 022...
Your password is your 4-digit PIN, prefixed by the letters LSE ( UPPER CASE letters, no spaces). Example: LSE6789
The PIN is not on your card for security reasons. It will be given to you on request in person at the Service Counter or Information Desk (LSE ID required).

Username/password failure?
Make sure you are entering the username and password correctly. 'LSE' must be in UPPER CASE (capital) letters.
Try a different ATHENS service. If you can access another ATHENS site, there is nothing wrong with your username. Your preferred service may be unavailable due to network connection problems; try it again later.
If you have just acquired a new or replacement ID card, please allow a couple of days for your ATHENS registration to be completed.
If you still can't access the service, and you are consistently getting a message such as 'not recognized' 'invalid' 'authentication failure' 'authorization required' we may need to make changes to your ATHENS record.
Please complete the form 'ATHENS username check' at the Information Desk
or send an email with 'Username check' as the subject line and your full name and card number (022...) as the message text.
You will receive an acknowledgment by email within 2 working days. You may have to wait longer before your case is dealt with, but keep trying your username as it may become available before you are notified.
While waiting, you can use a general ATHENS username and password, available from the Information Desk (LSE ID required). This username is not given out on the telephone or by email, and is not available to visitors including alumni. It can be used from anywhere on the campus to access most (though not all) ATHENS services.

ATHENS for visitors including alumni
For contractual reasons we are unable to give you the use of an ATHENS username.
You may use any ATHENS service listed as 'Available to all'.
You may also access Ingenta Journals via the guest login button on the BIDS login page. Please note that guest access will not allow you to view the full text of an article.
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) is available without a password via any Silver Platter CD-ROM in the Information Area - enquire at the Information Desk.
Staff and students of other UK universities
Your own library may be able to give you a username. You can use this here to access ATHENS services to which your home institution subscribes.
